This new act comes into force on 8 April 2008, so a bit of advance warning here, but make sure you prepare today. The act itself has been brought about to make those businesses who ignore the health and safety of their staff accountable.
Unlike a lot of new acts and regulation I think this one is not an over the top act, the fact that business of all sizes will be more accountable when very serious management failings lead to people being killed is a positive more towards making corporate social responsibility the norm.
However, only time will tell what is meant be ’serious management failings’, but this is a step in the right direction, although when writing this post I am thinking about recent years big company failings, this act also applies to smaller businesses that employ staff, my advice, make sure your health and safety procedures are up to date.
If you don’t have a health and safety policy now would be a good point to start planning, in the first instance you can visit the Health & Safety Executive website.
But, all in all, I hope this is the first in a move here in the UK towards more corporate responsibility, after all the actions of corporate UK has far more impact on the wider community than just profits and shareholder returns, think about being more ethical guys, you know Corporate Social Responsibility.
