I read an interesting article recently in the Birmingham Post, Joanne Geary, their Enterprise Editor wrote:
Small firms must make sure they allow all staff to put forward ideas if they want to win business through innovation, the entrepreneur behind web mapping business Multimap has said.
When I first read this I thought I am sure many small businesses do, then I thought back to my many years working for others and quickly changed my mind.
Now I’m not saying that no small business listens to staff, nor am I saying that all small business staff are going to come up with the next big idea for their employer, but how many small business owners with staff actually get them actively involved in the direction their small business takes, not enough I’ll wager.
Too many small business owners are so close to what they are doing, that many are probably blinkered when it comes to new ideas or a fresh approach, you know the ‘my way is the only way’ approach, yeah that always works!
Maybe it’s time small business owners knocked off early one night and actually sat with staff and listened to what they think of the business and its direction, it may just surprise you what they know! It may even help your staff feel more involved which = happy staff.
