Prowess the network that supports the growth of women’s business ownership has conducted research into the number of women leaving employment and going self employed.
The results though are not as striking as I was expecting, especially with the growth of the internet and all the opportunities it brings, especially for mothers at home, who I know don’t have lots of spare time, but there is a natural fit to start something small that ticks over and you can use these early years to try different ideas and then you can look at launching a more tried and tested business later on once the children are in education.
The prowess research showed that since 1990 the number of women moving from employment to self employment went from 22.2% up to 32.6%, I know that is almost a 50% increase, but I was still thinking it would have been higher, but then I guess a lot of business support out there isn’t really geared towards women. Incidentally, the same figures for men show a decline from 77.8% to 67.4%.
Some of its findings don’t really surprise me, it highlights that women are more likely than men to think that social, ethical and environmental considerations in business are important, that is something we have found with our female clients, they are far more socially aware than us men!
For those ladies out there thinking about self employment, Prowess is a good place to start, as it is targeted support for female entrepreneurs.

It’s so refreshing to hear that more women are becoming entrepreneurs! I know many women get discouraged, but they shouldn’t; we have loads of potential and a little hard work and dedication can get us anywhere! If you or any women you know want to start their own business, there is a great contest going on called “Make Your Dreams Come True With Mirassou”. They will be awarding one aspiring business woman $50,000 plus a team of professional consultants to help kick start her business! Visit http://www.mirassou.com/women_in_business/dreams.asp for more info. The deadline to enter is December 15th, 2007. I work with them, so I just thought I’d give you the info!

Hi Alexis,
There are certainly many more women going into business. I find many have a more focused view of what they want and how to get there than their male counterparts.
