Online Accountant and Online Accounting, the follow up

Yesterday I made a posting about online accountants and online accounting, and why you should care.

Without realising it my posting coincided with the Accountancy Age Awards, which were held in London last night. One of the categories is Best Use of Internet – Practice – Sponsored by Winweb.

Firstly, well done to Philip Woodgate and the team at Goodman Jones, also worth a mention here that part of this winning team in designing the website and its content were Dennis Howlett and David Terrar.

Here is why ‘online’ does matter, Damian Wild, Editor in Chief at Accountancy Age wrote this about Goodman Jones:

I’ve written before about the firm’s site and it continues to impress. Of the site, the judges said: ‘Professional, well-designed website with great functionality. The combination of the SME Blog, secure online meeting services and podcasts are impressive. Good use of technology. A well-structured site that is easy to navigate. The screens look really good and there are good, clear visuals. The blog and online meetings are excellent features.’

This is the second year in succession Goodman Jones have won, but more important than winning an award, this is what their online presence does for them, or should I say their clients:

Use of the internet is central to the service the firm offers its clients. The website www.goodmanjones.com is the gateway for clients to the multiple services the firm offers.

The practice runs an orthodox website and complements this with an SME blog and also publishes topical videos and podcasts, offering clients a broad choice of media from which to gather content.

Now ask Goodman Jones if being online matters, no better still, ask their clients!

Maybe we will look at throwing our hat in the ring next year?

I couldn’t agree more. Our awards are about drawing attention to the good work that many accountants undertake. And our (independent) judges make their choices on that basis. I’ll look forward to seeing your hat thrown next year!

As always I see my mouth has gotten me into trouble!

Well maybe I will finally have to put my money where my mouth is!

    Thanks for the contribution Damian.

I’m looking forward to see what happens in the coming year. I think there could be some major surprises – at least that’s what I think on the basis of stuff I know about now.

The pace at which technology has previously changed and is now being used to aid small business there are certainly going to be major changes over the next 2-3 years.

    Hi Jason

Many thanks for your kind words.

I agree with you. We’re going to see some major changes over the next 2-3 years. I use so many secure online tools and connect to networks securely via the internet. I can pretty much work on any computer to do what I need to do. No need to worry about stolen computers and disks.

IMO what is holding SME’s and accountants back won’t be the technology, but the culture. Glad to see that is not a problem in your case.

You are right the culture will need a huge nudge, but that is where ‘young blood’ comes in, the likes of the facebook generation, those who don’t know there was ever a time before computers in every home, lets just hope the older generation allow them their freedom to take business forward!
