These days there are so many other ‘professionals’ out there other than the accountant to help business. And that’s a good thing.
So how can a mentor help you and your business, and what does a mentor actually do?
A good mentor is there to help you (the ‘mentee’) develop a sustainable and successful business through guidance and encouragement.
This will be done by firstly helping identify your personal and business goals with you. Further mentoring will look at how to achieve these goals with action plans.
It will also be necessary for the mentor to gain an understanding of what problems or challenges you face. The mentor can then help you to improve your skills in these areas.
It is important that at all times you are honest with your mentor, only through an honest exchange will being mentored help you. You have to remember that a mentor wants to help you stay motivated and confident, but this can only be achieved if you are totally honest with him/her and yourself.
Mentoring is all about support and encouragement which in turn is designed to help you achieve your goals yourself!
You have to realise that a mentor is not there to give advice or to act as a consultant who provides solutions, the mentor is there to guide you and through this guidance you will find the solutions yourself.
I guess mentoring can be summed up as not so much about being a relationship that shows how much the mentor knows, more about how he/she imparts that knowledge and experience onto you the mentee.
