Is it December already?

The approach of the festive season has different affects on different people. There are people that are getting ready to slow down and hibernate, there are people who do not think that they have achieved enough throughout the year and are making themselves busy trying to catch-up; and there are people who have not noticed that the end of the year is rapidly approaching.

Whatever the category that you fall into here is some tips to assist your business.

Focus. Focus. Focus.

At this point of the year many business people may feel the need to jump at every “opportunity” that they come across. Opportunities are often wolves in sheep’s clothing. Avoid being side-tracked. Juggling multiple ventures will spread you thin and limit both your effectiveness and productivity. Do a limited number of things perfectly, not 10 things poorly.

Plan carefully the tasks that you are going to do over the festive season.

Depending on what kind of business you are running the festive season may well bring with it a natural lull in trade. Choose one area of your business that needs attention and work on that over the holidays. Be realistic and choose an area where a change can be made. It may be tempting to sit and do nothing. However, being able to think without the added day-to-day work pressure could lead to a new lease of creativity.

Take the time to improve your professional development.

It is not uncommon for business owners to forego their own professional development due to a shortage of time. There are a number of online courses that can be completed in a short space of time. It may be a good time to catch-up on trade knowledge or changes in the market place. Or you could take the time to catch-up on what your competitors are offering. Being knowledgeable source about your business sector and having specialist knowledge often creates a distinctive competitive edge.

Trim the fat.

The festive season is a good time to review your business and to trim the fat. Your wallet and your business bank account is your company’s life-blood. Being frugal by reducing overheads will help your business in the long-run. Watching every penny and monitoring expenses should be a way of life. Assessing what your business does or does not need during a quiet period will enable you to make level headed decisions. Your staff and colleagues may be less resistant to any changes you decided to make at the beginning of the year.

Last but not least – stop fire fighting.

Use the festive season to complete some of the outstanding or unfinished task that you have been meaning to do for the longest time. You will be surprised how motivating it can be to complete smaller tasks. Any tasks that are not worth completing should be binned. Focus on the things that will make a difference to your business. Take the time to think differently during the festive season.
