There has been so much change with the new Act that I thought it best to provide a more easy to read summary and that is what this fact sheet does, it provides an easy to read summary of the principal changes and new legislation introduced by the Act.

These new rates give about one month’s notice of the changes and apply to all journeys on or after 1 July 2009 and can be implemented immediately where employers are able and wish to do so.

Remember: Petrol hybrid cars are treated as petrol cars for this purpose.

Wednesday 22 April 2009, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, delivered his second Budget to the House of Commons, promising a Budget to speed economic recovery by protecting jobs and spreading prosperity.

It can’t be denied that Britain is facing its worst economic turmoil in decades, but will the Budget 2009 help or hinder?

Well, from April 2010, anyone earning over £150,000 will be taxed at 50% not 45% and there will be a restriction (loss) of personal allowance for those earning more than £100,000 – tax planning anyone?

From April 2011 tax relief on pension contributions for those earning over £100,000 is to be restricted and tapered down to 20%. So again, more high earners may want to consider other tax planning instead/as well as pension contributions?

Fuel duty to increase.

ISAs to increase to £10,200 from £5,100 in 2010-11, these limits are available to those aged 50 and over from 6 October 2009 and then to all in 2010-11.

Enhanced loss relief to be extended for another year i.e. the ability to carry back losses three years.

Capital allowances increasing to 40% for one year with effect from April 2009.

Stamp Duty Land Tax holiday for houses up to £175,000 extended.

Vehicle scrap scheme – scrap a car older than ten years and get £2,000 discount off new car.

Uprating to business rates can be spread over three years.

Government is topping up trade credit insurance for businesses whose insurers have reduced their cover.

Tax exemption on most foreign dividends received by UK groups and other foreign profit reforms.

A package of measures to protect tax receipts from tax evasion and avoidance (see below).

HMRC will provide a spotlight of all ‘tax planning’ schemes that they believe don’t work.

Alcohol and tobaccos duties increasing.

The above are only a small outline, but it looks like we are all going to be paying for someone else’s mistakes, for many years to come … tax planning anyone?

We have today updated our website for our latest Client Briefing, number 7, with all the latest on the implementation of the new Companies Act 2006.

This latest update covers the changes that came into effect on 6 April 2008, such as the shortening of filing periods for Limited Company accounts for private companies from 10 months to 9 months, increases in fines for late filing and the removal of the need for a private company to have a company secretary.

HMRC have announced new advisory fuel rates which take effect from 1 January 2008.

Our website has now been updated to reflect these changes.
